Friday 4th May means it’s Race Day 7 for the teams battling the elements and each other in the 2007 Polar Challenge, the 350-mile race to the Magnetic North Pole.
The Latitude-sponsored Arctic Virgins continue to make good progress. Currently the team is in second place giving the men a proper run for their money and keeping up with the best of them.
Team PolarBears, now a duo, have already made it to Checkpoint One first, but with the finish line still at least 200 miles and about a week away anything could happen! Just in this first leg alone these extraordinary individuals have travelled 110 miles across the Arctic pulling 90kg pulks through storms, encounters with polar bears and temperatures of -46C.
The teams have also had to deal with ‘flat light’. “Anybody who doesn’t know what that means”, says Chris from Team Bearing 360 North, “it’s where the sky meets the snow without any difference, and where it’s impossible to see any features on the ground.”
According to the latest race report The Arctic Virgins are nows fast approaching Check Point 1 where they can look forward to some well deserved bacon and muffins to see them on their way through to the second leg of the race – so watch out boys the girls are right behind you…and they’re upping the ante!
