Top 25 Web 2.0 search engines

The term Web 2.0 is now so overused – and misused by wannabe innovators and those who think they can fake expertise in this area – as to be rendered nearly meaningless. The fact remains, though, that there are core characteristics of Web 2.0 technology, such as the emphasis on collaboration and information-sharing between users, which do differentiate such software from that which came before it. This applies to search, too.

Now, the fine people at the Online Education Database have published a round-up of what they consider to be the top 25 Web 2.0 search engines. These new engines tend to be hyper-niche and many incorporate mash-up technology, tagging, social networking, recommendations, and even audio and visual search. This is well worth a look if you’re interested in how ventures other than the big boys are innovating in search – and what offerings are out there that might even be useful to you on a daily or occasional basis.
