Ask has gone 3D
By Jon Myers, Director Of Search in Search Engines |Ask |Search Technology
ASK.co.uk has launched ‘ASK3D’ here in the UK. There was a lot of talk about the launch in the US yesterday as the new system was unveiled. When I checked yesterday we were still on the old layout, but I’m pleased to say that we now have the re-engineered version of its search engine. This features a three-panel layout for search results, which offers up content from all search areas and a promise from ASK of “instant gettification” by offering people a quicker access to information.
On first review the system is looking very nice. I had a quick play and it does seem a lot easier to navigate once you have completed a search. The flow between web, images and blogs is well constructed and I like the way you can preview the site and urls of the feeds that you can sign up to in the Blogs and News sections.
It is information flow at your fingertips, but it is also interesting that they have hidden away the ‘Video Search’ tab. Once you find it, the system works well.
As soon as you arrive there are lots of options to personalise homepages, and to tailor search results and location targeting. It is interesting to see the new shopping functionality powered by Kelkoo (owned by Yahoo!).
All in all, on first review it seems to be a much better system than the old ASK. In particular it’s good to see a lot of the functionality that was in the beta AskX.com being retained in the new ASK3D.
