Google Buys A Security Company Called Postini For $625 Million

Well it’s only Monday and Google has announced another purchase to follow up on last weeks Grand Central acquisition. They have purchased Postini, which is a software security company for the small matter of $625 million.

The idea is that the business will fit into the ‘Apps’ side of the Google empire and will help secure Google Apps including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Talk, Calendar and Google’s other applications.

"With this transaction, we’re reinforcing our commitment to delivering compelling hosted applications to businesses of all sizes. With the addition of Postini, our apps are not just simple and appealing to users—they can also streamline the complex information security mandates within these organizations,” said Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Google.

This is another company to add to the growing list of acquisitions from Google. After the likes of the DoubleClick and Grand Central deals, this is a little bit different moving into the security side of things but in my eyes a shrewd move to strengthen the ‘Google Apps’ side of the business.
