Michael Birch on UK web companies coming to the US

By Jackie Danicki - Blogger

There was an intimate drinks reception at Bebo’s HQ in San Francisco on Wednesday evening in support of the Web Mission. As it had been described to me as “drinks in the office for a few of us”, I was expecting a few bottles of Heineken round the cubicles. But no.

Bebo’s HQ has the pool table, the ping pong table, and even a DJ booth. (Yes, really.) There was also a fully stocked bar, two gigantic fridges full of drink, and hands-down the best party food we’ve had so far this week. The London boys done good in America, that’s for sure!

I pulled aside Michael Birch, co-founder of Bebo (which just sold to AOL for $850 million), to ask him what he thinks of web companies coming to the US to try their chances. I was surprised to hear him say that there’s not much difference between the US and the UK in terms of finding success - if you’re good, that’s what counts. Birch also shared that he really knew nothing about the US climate when he brought Bebo to San Francisco, so is quite impressed with all the Web Mission start-ups are getting to learn on their trip out here. (Apologies in advance for the difficulty hearing him - the DJ had stopped as the party wrapped up to move on elsewhere, but our small crowd was quite a loud one!)
